Resting Metabolism
The resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the rate at which your body burns energy at rest. This energy burned at rest is required to maintain basic physiological functions.
Find out how much muscle contributes to RMR now!
How much energy?
Let’s rank from high to low the percentage of resting energy expenditure (REE) each accounts for:
1. Muscle 20-25%
2. Brain 20%
3. Residual tissue 15-20%
4. Liver 15-20%
5. Heart 10%
6. Kidneys 8-10%
7. Fat tissue 5%
Muscle ranks the highest at 20-25% of REE.
So it looks like by building muscle you can definitely increase your metabolism or the amount of energy you burn at rest.
But…
Further considerations
How much muscle can you build? How many calories does muscle burn?
Male: 9.8-14.7kg per year (127-191 calories per day)
Female: 3.5-5.3kg per year (46-69 calories per day)
Even it’s not a significant increase, but every little bit counts.
There are also individual variables such as genetics, training strategy, nutrition and recovery that will influence how much and how fast you can gain muscle.
