Why You Lose Weight When You Do a Juice Detox

Is the juice detox method effective?

A Juice Detox or juice cleanse method involves only drinking fruit or vegetable juices daily, without consuming solid food. This method claims to “detox” the body and help with weight loss, but is it really effective?

While your weight may drop, it’s not all fat being lost, and it doesn’t mean your body is actually detoxifying. Let’s look at why this is the case.

Does the Juice Detox method really detoxify?

In fact, the body already has the ability to eliminate toxins, mainly through the liver. The only way to enhance detoxification is by maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Other methods generally won’t help.

Now we can talk about the weight loss. Losing weight during a juice detox is inevitable but it’s not all fat. So why will you lose weight?

Reasons for weight loss

#1 Reduction in solid food in the digestive tract

The average weight of a meal is about 0.55 kg. Assuming you eat 3 times a day, the total weight will be:
0.55kg x 3 = 1.65kg

These food remnants remain in the digestive tract for a period of time. However, in the first two days of a juice detox, when you stop eating solids, this 1.65 kg of weight will be replaced by the relatively juices, causing an immediate weight loss.

#2 Loss of Carbohydrates and Water

Your body will lose carbohydrate stores and water. Water makes up about 55-65% of body weight, and carbohydrates (glycogen) are stored in the liver and muscles. When you stop consuming solid foods, your body no longer stores large amounts carbohydrates and water, further reducing your weight.

#3 loss of a small amount of fat

Over the course of the juice detox, you may lose a small amount of fat. However, since you aren’t consuming any protein and your calorie intake is severely restricted, you may also lose some muscle mass.

Most of the weight lost through a juice detox will quickly return once normal eating is resumed. Therefore, the fat lost during this method is minimal, and it is not an effective weight loss strategy.
